Despite the 2020 lockdown on global tourism and continued fears over new COVID strains, the hospitality industry is on more than a rebound — it’s booming, according to the Research and Markets 2024 “U.S. Sustainable Travel Market" survey. Ecotourism (or sustainable tourism) is also rising, with an expected growth of over $50 billion by 2029.
Travelers’ interest in sustainable tourism, aka ecotourism, in Italy continues to gain momentum. According to a survey published by Statista, awareness of sustainable tourism by Italians has increased significantly over the past 10 years. Some 85% of respondents were aware of the concept of sustainable tourism in 2021.
In 2023, the Azores' tourism sector broke all records by not only registering about 3.8 million overnight stays and 1.2 million guests, the highest since 2001, but by also receiving multiple accolades.
Last year, Phuket, Thailand, was the most overcrowded tourist destination. For each of the island’s 416,000 inhabitants, 118 vacationers showed up, according to a study by MoneyTransfers.com.
